Map accuracy depends on imagery alignment and how carefully the boundary is traced; expect a few percent of error. For legal boundaries, use a licensed survey or your county parcel records.

How to calculate acreage

Acreage is just area expressed in acres. Work out the area in square feet, then divide by 43,560:

acres = area in square feet ÷ 43,560

If your measurements are in meters, find the area in square meters and divide by 4,046.86. For a rectangular lot, the area is length × width. A lot that is 420 ft deep and 210 ft wide is 88,200 sq ft, or 88,200 ÷ 43,560 = 2.02 acres.

Most real parcels are not perfect rectangles. For those, either trace the outline with the map tool above, or break the land into simple shapes (rectangles and triangles), work out each one, and add them together. The irregular lot calculator does this for four-sided lots.

“Square side length” is the side of a perfect square with that area, which helps you picture the size.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate acreage?

Find the area in square feet, then divide by 43,560. For a rectangle, multiply length by width (in feet) first. For example, a 300 ft × 150 ft lot is 45,000 sq ft, which is 45,000 ÷ 43,560 = 1.03 acres.

How many square feet are in an acre?

One acre is exactly 43,560 square feet, which is 4,046.86 square meters or 0.4047 hectares. A square acre measures about 208.7 feet on each side.

How do I find the acreage of an irregular lot?

The easiest way is to trace the boundary on the map above. If you have tape measurements instead, measure the four sides and one diagonal and use the irregular lot calculator, which splits the lot into two triangles.

How accurate is the map measurement?

The math itself is accurate to well under 0.5%. The real limit is how closely you trace the boundary and how well the satellite imagery lines up, so expect a few percent of error. Use a licensed survey or county parcel data for legal or sale purposes.

How big is an acre compared to a football field?

An American football field including both end zones is 360 × 160 ft = 57,600 sq ft, or about 1.32 acres. One acre is roughly 75% of a football field.

How many acres are in a square mile?

There are 640 acres in one square mile. A quarter section is 160 acres, and a quarter-quarter section is 40 acres.
